Flåmsbana - idyll og dramatikk

The Flåm Railway – idyllic and dramatic

Since 1998, the company Flåm Utvikling as has been responsible for marketing the Flåm Railway, one of Norway’s largest and most spectacular tourist attractions. As one of Norway’s few private railways, we can offer a train trip through some of Norway’s most beautiful, unspoiled and dramatic scenery.

Our rolling stock consists of six electric locomotives and 12 carriages, specially designed for this demanding line which runs from the fjord to the high mountains. Along the way, passengers are given information over the train’s PA system, and during the summer season, there is also a guide on most trains.

The train journey between Flåm at the head of Aurlandsfjorden and the mountain station at Myrdal on the Bergen Railway is a railway line unmatched anywhere else in Europe – 20km long, with a height difference of 865m and an average incline of 1:18. The severity of the incline is quite unique for an ordinary railway and, in order to overcome the huge height difference, the line has been partly constructed in tunnels which spiral in and out of the mountainside.

The line runs through the steep and narrow valley of Flåmsdalen, with views over waterfalls and imposing mountains. The journey from one end of the line to the other takes about 60 minutes. The trains slow down or stop next to the best viewpoints. The trains to and from Flåm connect at Myrdal with most daytime trains between Oslo and Bergen.

The Flåm Railway operates all-year round with 9-10 departures daily from Flåm – Myrdal - Flåm during the period May – September, and four departures daily during the rest of the year.
