Rallarveg-report I

Rallarvegsrapport_formatIn the beginning of May we started receiving e-mails and phone-calls about Rallarvegen. It is hard for us to tell when the snow will melt and when the road will be without snow. This varies from year to year and is all dependent on the weather we get in June and where the winds has placed the biggest snow-piles during the winter. The staff at Finse has decided to keep a close eye on the speed of melting and will give wekly updates through Rallarveg-reports. Hopefully we are able to bike the whole trip from Finse to Flåm without any snow by the end of June.

Our plan was to go skiing from Hallingskeid to Finse, but you can't always expect everything to as planned. Yr.no tricked us into believing that it was going to be a sunny day. The sun dissappeared, after a while the wind came, then it started raining and eventually snowing.

We tried to compare the anmount of snow with last year, but our memory let us down. So instead of doing that we just observed the snow and the big snowpiles. In general the snow was rotten, extremely rotten. Every step we took, we fell throug the snow. We spent three hours going 5 km. When the rain was hitting the face like tiny rocks, we started rethinking the plan of going all the way to Finse. The skitrip was soon concluded to come to an end when we arrived at Grjotrust. We were actually satisfied to have made it that far (in 3 hours...). One of the snowpiles that we always end up digging in th end of June is there and we wanted to see what it looked like there. It was pretty big and we are prepared to dig this year too.

Having said all this we must include the fact that we could see parts of Rallarvegen along the way. This in it self is a good sign, when the raod and stones along the road are visible the snow melts even faster. That the snow is too rotten to ski on is a very good sign.

The first trip is all about mapping out the conditions for the commencing melting process. Next week the plan is to go from Finse to Fageernut, we are hoping for a sunny day.
